BIO

For more than 30 years, Uzzi Raanan has served as a lawyer and advisor in bankruptcy and business reorganization matters. Trustees and creditor committees frequently turn to him with their most challenging matters. Clients seek counsel from Uzzi for tough business challenges and when looking for proactive strategies to resolve business problems.

Uzzi has extensive experience representing creditors and debtors and Chapter 11 creditor committees as well as court-appointed receivers and bankruptcy trustees with regard to insolvencies, business bankruptcy preplanning and litigation, state and federal court receiverships, and commercial law disputes, including loan guaranties and assignments of ownership interests. His litigation practice includes prosecuting and defending fraudulent transfer and preferential transfer avoidance actions, nondischargeability, discharge, asset sales, and claims disputes. He also specializes in handling appeals and a myriad of other issues arising in bankruptcy.

Uzzi has held leadership positions with various bar groups, including serving as a member of the California Lawyers Association’s Board of Representatives (including Board Secretary), Chair of the Business Law Section and Co-Chair of the Insolvency Law Committee of the State Bar of California, member of the Board of the Los Angeles Bankruptcy Forum (LABF), President of the Beverly Hills Bar Foundation, and member of the Board of Governors of the Beverly Hills Bar Association. In 2019, Uzzi was honored as Bankruptcy Lawyer of the Year by the Century City Bar Association.  Uzzi has spoken on the topic of insolvency on multiple panels and is a regular contributor to Westlaw's Commercial Finance Newsletter (CFN).

Represented entrepreneur defendant in San Francisco Superior Court case involving an attempt to enforce a personal continuing guarantee.  After a multi-day court trial, obtained a favorable judgment for client.

Represented chapter 11 trustee in operating bankruptcy case involving a chain of four restaurants with hundreds of employees.

In re Brett Arthur Butler

Represented debtor in subchapter V case, including a trial over valuation of debtor’s business, resulting in favorable ruling and confirmation of Chapter 11 Plan.

In re Pacific 9 Transportation, Inc.

Represented committee of unsecured creditors in a trucking chapter 11 case.  Worked with debtor and creditors on various budgeting and labor issues, as well as on a plan of reorganization that was ultimately confirmed.

In re MediaShift, Inc.

Represented committee of unsecured creditors in a chapter 11 case involving a group of media technology companies.  Negotiated a complex bid and purchase agreement with a stalking horse bidder which included a carveout for creditors.

In re TIFKAH (aka House Research Institute)

Represented chapter 7 trustee in liquidating assets of a nationally prominent ear disorders research institute, a California public benefit nonprofit corporation.

In re Ezri Namvar

Represented chapter 11 trustee in case involving hundreds of entities with numerous, diverse assets.

In re Marion “Suge” Knight, Jr.

Represented chapter 7 trustee in case administration and litigation, including analysis of intellectual property rights and intellectual property royalty accounting and accounts receivable.

R. Todd Neilson, as Chapter 7 Trustee v. John Chiang, as California State Controller (class action)

Filed class action and represented class members comprised of bankruptcy trustees who challenged California Controller’s Office policy of denying applications by bankruptcy estates to recover debtor funds that escheated to the State of California prepetition.  Obtained favorable results in trial and appellate courts and negotiated settlement with Controller resulting in reversal of the disputed policy.  In re Death Row Records, Inc., 2012 WL 952292 (9th Cir.
